Buying Guide

How to buy gold jewellery, well.

A buyer's guide to weight, purity, making charges and what actually matters when you purchase gold jewellery in India.

A gold piece is three numbers — purity, weight and making. Get them right and you've bought well.

Section 01

Purity (22K vs 18K)

22K (916) is 91.6% pure gold — the South Indian standard for bridal and traditional pieces. 18K (750) is harder, lighter on the budget and better for stone-set or daily pieces.

Section 02

Net Weight & Gross Weight

Gross weight includes stones and findings. Net (gold) weight is what determines metal value. Always read both on the invoice.

Section 03

Making Charges

Quoted per gram or as a percentage. Handcrafted and intricate pieces carry higher making — and that's where the artistry lives.

Section 04

Wastage

Genuine wastage in handcrafted work is real and should be itemised. Ambaa Gold invoices show it explicitly.

Section 05

Hallmark

Insist on a BIS 916 hallmark and a matching certificate. Without it, walk away.

Key takeaways
  • Choose 22K or 18K by use
  • Read net weight on invoice
  • Itemised making & wastage
