Why gold rates differ between cities in India

One international price, many local boards

Gold is priced globally in dollars per ounce. By the time that reaches a shop board in Mumbai, Chennai or Hyderabad, it has passed through the rupee exchange rate, import duty, refining and transport, local bullion association quotes and finally each showroom's own rounding.

That chain is why two cities can differ by a few hundred rupees per ten grams on the same morning without anyone doing anything unusual.

What actually creates the gap

Local bullion associations publish their own daily reference rates, and cities with large bullion markets such as Mumbai tend to sit closest to the landed cost. Cities further from an import and refining hub carry a little more transport and handling.

Demand matters too. During Tamil and Telugu wedding seasons, or around Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras, regional demand can nudge local premiums. Purity being compared also matters — always check whether a board is quoting 24K, 22K or 18K.

How to use the rate as a buyer

Compare like with like: the same purity, the same weight basis, on the same day. Then look at making charges and wastage, which usually vary more between sellers than the metal rate does between cities.

Our live rate page shows 24K, 22K and 18K gold alongside silver, so retail partners and customers can check the number before confirming an order.

Frequently asked questions

Which city has the cheapest gold in India?
Cities with major bullion markets, such as Mumbai, often sit closest to landed cost, but the difference is usually small next to variations in making charges.
Why does my jeweller's rate differ from the news rate?
News rates often quote 24K bullion without GST or local association premiums. Shop boards quote the purity they sell, and GST is added on the bill.
Does the rate change during the day?
Yes. International prices move continuously, and shops typically update once or twice a day against their association reference.
